Trump’s Name Removed From Kennedy Center Following Court Order

A federal mandate has resulted in the removal of U.S. President Donald Trump’s name from the exterior of the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. In a recent legal submission the performing arts complex confirmed full adherence to the court directive. All associated branding has now been erased from the physical structure, the official website and promotional materials.
The dismantling process began on Friday June 12 to meet a deadline established by a federal judge. The court had previously determined that altering the venue’s title was an illegal act. While thunderstorms initially postponed the exterior work on Friday afternoon, contractors resumed the operation early on Saturday morning.
Legal background
U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper issued the primary ruling in late May. He stated that the facility serves as a statutory memorial to former President John F Kennedy and therefore cannot undergo a name change without direct congressional authorisation. Cooper also prohibited plans to temporarily shut the venue for proposed renovations.
Lawyers representing the Trump administration filed motions to halt the process. They argued that immediately altering the signage could lead to public misunderstanding if the initial judgement were later reversed. Both the presiding judge and an appeals court dismissed these attempts to delay the mandate.
During the preliminary scaffolding work on Friday an advocacy group named Hands Off the Arts staged a demonstration outside the building. Participants gathered to observe the preparations and reacted vocally when organisers announced that the government’s final appeal had failed. By the early hours of Saturday contractors draped large plastic sheets over the framework to conceal the extraction of the letters. This temporary covering remained in place throughout the afternoon.
The legal dispute originated last year when the president declared his intention to affix his name to the cultural institution. Following this announcement he enacted several administrative changes in February 2025. These actions included replacing multiple board members, installing himself as a trustee and subsequently securing the position of chairman for the organisation.
