Tensions are reportedly mounting within Red Bull as Max Verstappen has yet to officially commit his future to the Formula 1 giants. According to emerging reports from the Netherlands the team’s senior management is growing increasingly anxious over their star driver’s next move.

Leading Dutch motorsport journalist Erik van Haren claims that Red Bull executives are still waiting for a firm declaration of loyalty. While Verstappen recently attempted to play down a visit to the team’s Austrian headquarters, it is understood that he stopped short of confirming whether he intends to see out the remainder of his current contract.

An active exit clause

Verstappen is currently tied to Red Bull on a deal that runs until 2028 but the agreement features a critical performance-related exit clause for 2026. This specific mechanism is expected to become active at the summer break if the driver finds himself outside the top two in the championship standings.

Given that he currently sits seventh in the standings it seems highly probable that this escape clause will be triggered. Van Haren noted that while having the option does not guarantee Verstappen will actually use it, his ongoing silence is creating significant unease within the paddock.

«They’re really hoping he’ll declare, ‘I’m staying with Red Bull’,» van Haren explained in an interview. «That would calm the waters and allow them to bring in fresh faces, which in turn makes the team more attractive to sponsors. Verstappen is the cornerstone of Red Bull – he practically carries the team on his shoulders.»

Rival teams on high alert

The continued uncertainty has naturally intensified speculation linking the four-time world champion with a dramatic departure from the Milton Keynes-based outfit. Mercedes, McLaren and Ferrari have all been suggested as potential landing spots should he decide to seek a new challenge.

The lack of clarity following last week’s routine evaluation meeting in Austria has only added fuel to the fire. With the crucial summer break fast approaching the entire sport will be watching closely to see if Verstappen provides the confirmation Red Bull desperately needs or if he begins to formulate a definitive exit plan.
