The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is preparing to inject $50 mln into the property sector of Uzbekistan. Representatives from the financial institution confirmed that the substantial loan will be directed to the national Mortgage Refinancing Company to heavily bolster the domestic housing market.

The credit will be issued in the form of a synthetic local currency, a unique financial instrument tied to various currencies or exchange assets. This specific structure will allow the domestic company to secure vital medium-term funding in Uzbek soums and maintain steady support for the rapidly developing national mortgage sector.

According to the EBRD, this strategic financial package is designed to dramatically strengthen the company’s influence within the property sector and expand public access to affordable housing finance.

Building a sustainable ecosystem

Beyond simply providing immediate funds, the capital injection will be used to cultivate a far more sustainable market ecosystem. The initiative aims to drive systemic industry improvements by achieving the following goals:

  • Introducing highly standardised approaches for assessing potential borrowers.
  • Upgrading overall risk management systems across the financial sector.
  • Making the dream of homeownership a more realistic prospect for ordinary citizens.

A major cornerstone of this new funding agreement is a strict focus on gender equality within the property market.

Officials have confirmed that at least 20% of the newly allocated funds are exclusively ring-fenced to support mortgage loans for Uzbek women. This targeted financial strategy is specifically designed to broaden female access to specialised lending tools and empower a significantly higher number of women to step onto the property ladder as independent homeowners.
