The newly established agency of former NCT star Mark Lee has issued a formal apology after the K-pop idol faced severe backlash for wearing a T-shirt prominently displaying the United States Confederate flag.

The controversy erupted when photographs circulated on social media showing the 26-year-old singer wearing the garment. The Confederate flag is globally recognised by anti-hate organisations as a symbol of white supremacy, racial discrimination and the historical defence of slavery.

In a statement posted to its Instagram Stories his label Upper Room attempted to clarify the situation. The company claimed the piece was selected solely as a vintage wardrobe item but admitted they later recognised the historical sensitivity of the symbol.

«We would like to extend our sincere apologies for the concern, discomfort and disappointment caused by the vintage T-shirt,» the agency stated.

Upper Room explained that they took internal measures to ensure the flag would not be visible in any official promotional content. However, the image was leaked externally by a third party which resulted in the symbol being visible to the public.

Taking full responsibility for the oversight the agency stressed that both Upper Room and the artist unequivocally reject racism, hate, discrimination or any form of intolerance. They also promised to implement stricter review procedures for future wardrobe choices to prevent similar blunders.

Fierce fan backlash and solo speculation

Despite the swift corporate apology the reaction from the fanbase has been overwhelmingly negative. Netizens have flooded social media to express their anger and sheer disbelief at the oversight. Given that Mark grew up in Canada and received a North American education many fans argue it is virtually impossible for him to be ignorant of what the Confederate flag stands for. Critics claim that as the co-CEO of his own company he should be held personally accountable rather than hiding behind an agency statement.

The scandal has also ignited intense speculation about the underlying reasons behind his shocking departure from K-pop giant SM Entertainment. Mark left NCT and its various sub-units in April 2026 to launch his own solo venture. Following this recent controversy some disillusioned supporters are beginning to dig deeper into his personal ideology.

Rumours are now circulating online that one of the primary reasons he chose to leave the highly controlled idol system and go solo was to freely express his conservative views. The naming of his new label, Upper Room, a direct biblical reference to the site of the Last Supper, has further fuelled theories among fans that Mark is pivoting towards a conservative Christian route in both his personal life and future musical endeavours.
