Uzbekistan head coach Fabio Cannavaro has addressed the criticism surrounding his side’s winless World Cup campaign.

Following three consecutive defeats in the group stage, the Italian manager acknowledged that results were disappointing but argued that the tournament was far from a total failure for the national team.

Speaking to Championat.asia after returning from the competition, Cannavaro stated that he accepts the scrutiny directed at him and his squad. However, he stressed that the experience gained against elite global opposition was a necessary stepping stone for the future of Uzbek football.

A learning curve on global stage

Cannavaro pointed out that the majority of his players were competing at this level for the very first time. He suggested that the intense pressure and the physical intensity of opponents like Portugal and Colombia represented a significant leap for the squad.

«Many players were encountering this level of competition and scrutiny for the first time,» Cannavaro explained. «It has been an invaluable experience for the players, my staff and the federation.»

The manager also defended his frequent squad rotations during the tournament, revealing that he utilised 23 of his 26 called-up players. He noted that persistent injury issues and a lack of competitive match fitness for key members of the squad forced his hand regarding the starting line-ups.

Focus shifts to Asian Cup

Despite the heavy defeats, Cannavaro insisted that there were positive signs, particularly during isolated periods in the matches against Colombia and DR Congo where the team displayed moments of high-quality football.

«We do not consider this tournament a failure,» he stated. «We now need to implement certain changes. If the World Cup has provided us with priceless experience then the Asian Cup is our primary objective.»

Looking ahead, Cannavaro plans to overhaul the team’s tactical approach. He hinted at a potential shift in formation and emphasised the need for greater control during matches. He identified a lack of concentration during crucial phases as a primary area for improvement, noting that his team must learn to maintain their defensive structure right up until the final whistle.
