Khamenei’s Remarks Expose Growing Divisions Within Iran’s Leadership

Competing interpretations of Khamenei’s remark have highlighted growing tensions between Iranian hardliners and officials favouring continued negotiations

A brief but carefully worded statement by Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has reportedly deepened divisions within the country’s political and military establishment, highlighting growing disagreements over Tehran’s approach to post-war diplomacy with the United States.

According to reports, the controversy centres on Khamenei’s use of the phrase «in principle» while endorsing a U.S.-brokered agreement following the recent conflict. Although he approved the deal, he added that he had held «a different opinion in principle»—a remark that has been interpreted in sharply different ways by competing factions within Iran’s leadership.

Some officials reportedly view the statement as a reluctant endorsement of negotiations driven by economic pressures and the desire to avoid renewed conflict. Hardline figures, however, see it as a signal that Iran should resist further engagement with Washington, fuelling uncertainty over the country’s negotiating position.

The debate intensified after conservative lawmaker Mahmoud Nabavian claimed on state television that Iran’s negotiators had exceeded the Supreme Leader’s instructions during talks with the United States. The interview was reportedly cut short, adding to speculation about divisions within the ruling establishment.

Political analysts say the differing interpretations of Khamenei’s remarks have exposed a broader struggle over the direction of Iran’s foreign policy at a time when the country is balancing diplomatic negotiations, economic challenges and regional security concerns.
