The Argentine national football team has broken its own historical record at the FIFA World Cup. During their round of 32 clash against Cape Verde at the 2026 tournament the South American squad managed to find the back of the net in the first half of a World Cup match for the eighth consecutive time.

The historic goal was delivered by none other than Lionel Messi who scored in the 29th minute following a precise pass from defender Lisandro Martinez. This crucial strike cemented a brand new team milestone for the reigning world champions.

Looking ahead to the round of 16

Securing a victory over the African nation has propelled Argentina into the next knockout phase of the competition where they are scheduled to face Egypt. This highly anticipated fixture will take place on July 7 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

In addition to securing the team’s progression Messi’s goal against Cape Verde allowed the veteran forward to establish several unique individual records on the global stage.

The legendary attacker’s latest performance secured two major historic achievements:

  • Becoming the first footballer in history to score seven goals across two separate World Cup tournaments.
  • Emerging as the very first player to successfully score at every single stage of the competition from the initial group fixtures right through to the decisive knockout matches.

Over the course of his international career spanning more than two decades the 39-year-old superstar has accumulated a staggering 124 goals and 64 assists for the Argentine national side.
