President Donald Trump has published a new image showing a $100 note adorned with his signature. The social media post comes several months after the U.S. Treasury Department confirmed that a sitting president’s signature would appear on American paper currency for the very first time.

In March the Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed the administration’s intention to include the president’s signature on cash as a tribute to the 250th anniversary of the United States. Following the release of the image on Friday journalists have contacted the Treasury to clarify whether these updated $100 notes are already in active production.

The newly released image displays Trump’s signature positioned directly above Bessent’s own name. Historically the $100 bill has only ever featured the signatures of the Treasury secretary and the U.S. treasurer but never the active head of state.

«The President’s mark on history as the architect of America’s Golden Age economic revival is undeniable. Printing his signature on the American currency is not only appropriate but also well deserved,» stated U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach during the initial announcement in March.

Expanding the presidential brand

This currency update aligns with Trump’s ongoing ambition to stamp his name and likeness across a vast array of national documents and public landmarks. His administration has already introduced his image and name to commemorative U.S. passports, national park passes, institutional banners in Washington DC and special investment accounts for infants. Furthermore authorities in Florida recently renamed Palm Beach International Airport in his honour.

Some political allies in Congress are eager to take these commemorative efforts even further. Legislators have introduced a bill aimed at placing Trump’s portrait on a special $250 anniversary note. However this outcome remains highly improbable as it would require the legislative backing of Democratic senators. Current U.S. law firmly dictates that only deceased individuals may be depicted on national currency or securities but the proposed House legislation seeks to carve out a specific exception for former and current presidents.

Prototypes and political pushback

Earlier this year staff at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing began developing prototypes for the proposed $250 note featuring both Trump’s portrait and his signature. Defending the move during a White House press briefing in May Bessent told the CNN journalist Kaitlan Collins that he saw nothing inappropriate about the concept.

Bessent argued that it was perfectly reasonable for the person holding the office of president during the nation’s 250th anniversary to feature on the commemorative note. When pressed by Collins on whether political appointees were driving the design project the Treasury secretary acknowledged their involvement but stressed that his department simply prepares for all eventualities in case the legislation is officially passed.
