Kimi Antonelli Hunts Down Lewis Hamilton to Secure Maiden Sprint Victory at Silverstone

Kimi Antonelli delivered a masterclass in racecraft to secure his maiden Formula 1 Sprint victory at the 2026 British Grand Prix, overtaking polesitter Lewis Hamilton to extend his championship lead.
In front of a packed and sun-drenched Silverstone crowd, the Mercedes teenager bided his time before executing a perfect move on the seven-time world champion. McLaren’s Lando Norris completed the top three after a frantic 17-lap dash that delivered spectacular wheel-to-wheel racing.
A frantic start
As the lights went out, Hamilton got a brilliant launch to squeeze Antonelli and retain the lead into Turn 1. Behind the front row, the grid immediately descended into chaos. Max Verstappen dropped back from third while the McLaren duo of Norris and Oscar Piastri surged forward.
Norris briefly snatched second place from Antonelli but the Mercedes driver quickly recharged his battery to reclaim the position. George Russell also capitalised on the early scrapping to vault into the top three before a fierce battle with Verstappen pushed him back down the order.
Further back, Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso collided at Turn 3. The Aston Martin driver was sent spinning while Perez was forced into the pits for a new nose and subsequently slapped with a 10-second time penalty by the FIA stewards.
The battle for the lead
Despite Hamilton building an early one-second advantage, he could not shake the relentless pace of the Mercedes in his mirrors. By lap five Antonelli had closed the gap and latched onto the rear wing of the Ferrari.
The defining moment came on lap eight. After a dummy move around the outside of the Wellington Straight, Antonelli forced Hamilton to deploy his defensive battery. Leaving the home hero vulnerable down the Hangar Straight, the teenager blasted past to take the lead. Once in clean air Antonelli checked out, crossing the line 2.3 seconds clear of the Ferrari to deny Hamilton a famous home Sprint win.
Fierce midfield scraps
Behind the leading pair the action was unrelenting. Russell and Verstappen engaged in a spectacular multi-lap duel through Stowe and Club corners. Russell ultimately emerged victorious to claim fourth place while Charles Leclerc cleverly capitalised on the scrapping to relegate Verstappen to sixth.
In the fight for the final point, Liam Lawson managed to nurse his gamble on the soft tyres to the end to finish eighth. The Racing Bulls driver survived a very late and highly contentious lunge from Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar, with Lawson’s aggressive defensive chop under braking noted by the stewards for a post-race investigation.
