Jordan Henderson Hospitalised With Severe Wrist Injury

England’s historic 3-2 World Cup victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium on Sunday night was marred by a serious wrist injury to Jordan Henderson during the post-match celebrations.
The Three Lions secured the memorable win thanks to a Jude Bellingham brace and a Harry Kane penalty. Thomas Tuchel‘s men were forced to play the majority of the second half with ten men after Jarell Quansah was dismissed following a VAR review. Despite the numerical disadvantage England successfully absorbed relentless Mexican pressure for the final 30 minutes.
Following the final whistle the squad approached the travelling supporters behind the goal to join in with their now customary rendition of the Oasis anthem «Wonderwall». It was during these jubilant scenes that the injury occurred.
England defender Dan Burn revealed that Henderson tripped over an advertising hoarding and television footage subsequently showed the midfielder being carried away on a stretcher.
Speaking to the press after the match Thomas Tuchel confirmed the severity of the incident. «He injured his wrist, he is at the moment in the hospital,» the manager explained. «It is a quite serious injury.»
Tuchel expressed his dismay that the accident had put a dampener on a famous win.
«It just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I don’t know the procedure which is going on. I just did the media duties and the doc told me he’s in the hospital.»
While the rest of the squad flew back to their training headquarters in Missouri Henderson remained in Mexico City overnight accompanied by a member of the national team’s backroom staff.
The hospitalisation serves as a bitter blow for Henderson who recently made history as the first male English player to feature at four World Cups after making an appearance in the final group game against Panama. Although he was an unused substitute against Mexico the veteran still managed to pick up a yellow card from the touchline during the tense closing stages of the match.
