Olivia Wilde has weighed in on the growing online debate about modern relationships, saying that having a boyfriend is «no longer required» and describing the shift as «a good evolution» for women.

Speaking while promoting her new comedy The Invite, Wilde said relationships should be a choice rather than a social expectation. She argued that many people remain in unhappy partnerships because they fear being single, adding that sacrificing one’s identity to preserve a relationship is far more damaging than being alone.

«Relationships don’t have to be embarrassing. But they’re no longer required. A boyfriend is no longer required, which I think is a good evolution,» Wilde said.

The actress and director explained that The Invite explores intimacy, communication and the challenges long-term couples face. She believes honest conversations are essential to maintaining healthy relationships and hopes the film encourages audiences to reflect on their own experiences.

Wilde’s comments have resonated with a wider discussion on social media about changing attitudes towards dating, independence and self-worth, particularly among younger generations.
