Taylor Swift has found herself at the centre of an online controversy after confusion over the identity of a guest at her wedding to NFL star Travis Kelce sparked criticism across social media.
The backlash began after posts on X claimed that Steven J. Demetriou, executive chair of engineering company Amentum, attended the ceremony. Amentum has faced scrutiny because it holds U.S. government contracts related to immigration detention facilities, prompting some users to criticise Swift and accuse her of associating with figures connected to the industry.
However, the situation quickly became muddled as conflicting reports emerged about which member of the Demetriou family was actually present. Initial coverage identified Steven J. Demetriou, while later reports suggested his son, Ohio state representative Steven J. Demetriou Jr., may also have attended. Further reporting indicated that both father and son were among the guests, with the family’s invitation reportedly linked to Reggie King—Demetriou’s adoptive son and a childhood friend of Travis Kelce.
The uncertainty has not stopped the online reaction. Some social media users branded the singer «evil» and called for a boycott, while others urged caution, arguing that many of the claims circulating online were based on incomplete or misleading information.
Neither Swift nor Kelce has publicly commented on the controversy.
The episode highlights how quickly speculation surrounding high-profile celebrities can spread online, particularly when political issues become intertwined with personal events, and how conflicting reports can amplify public debate before all the facts are established.
