Tottenham Shatter Transfer Record with £100 Mln Sandro Tonali Signing

Tottenham Hotspur have successfully secured the services of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali in a club-record transfer that could ultimately reach £100 mln. The 26-year-old makes the move to the capital after spending three seasons with the Magpies.
Newcastle previously rejected an opening offer of roughly £80 mln from the north London club. However the two Premier League sides eventually compromised on a lucrative package that guarantees an upfront payment of £92.5 mln with an additional £7.5 mln tied to performance add-ons.
This blockbuster arrival follows swiftly on the heels of another major midfield investment. Spurs recently recruited Mateus Fernandes from London rivals West Ham in a separate deal worth £85 mln.
Tonali originally arrived in English football from AC Milan for £55 mln back in July 2023. His inaugural season was heavily derailed when the Italian Football Federation handed him a 10-month suspension for violating gambling regulations. Despite this significant setback the Italy international returned to establish himself as a vital asset at St James’ Park.
His comeback season was crowned with success as he helped guide Newcastle to the Carabao Cup in 2025, which famously ended the club’s 70-year wait for major silverware.
Tottenham’s current manager Roberto de Zerbi has been a long-time admirer of his compatriot. The Italian coach first pinpointed Tonali as a key target several years ago while managing Sassuolo in Serie A.
Tonali’s signature marks the continuation of an exceptionally aggressive summer recruitment drive by Tottenham. The club’s total expenditure on just three players, centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke alongside new midfield duo Fernandes and Tonali, could soon hit a staggering £237 mln. In addition to these massive outlays the club has also strengthened its defensive options by picking up both Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers.
