Sir David Beckham cut a dejected figure in the stands on Wednesday night as England succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Argentina in the World Cup semi-final. The former England captain, accompanied by his wife Victoria, appeared to shed a tear as the final whistle ended his nation’s tournament hopes.

Throughout the competition, the Beckhams have been fixtures at matches, with television broadcasts frequently cutting to the pair during moments of celebration. Earlier this week, Victoria faced light-hearted mockery online after her stoic reaction to Jude Bellingham‘s extra-time goal against Norway went viral.

Sir David defended his wife’s composure on social media, joking that her reactions were simply «slightly slower» than his own. In the stands during the semi-final, however, there was no hiding the shared disappointment. While Sir David was comforted by Victoria and three of their children, their eldest son Brooklyn, who has experienced a public falling out with his parents, was absent.

A twist of historical rivalry

Wednesday’s result evoked ghosts of past encounters for the former midfielder. Sir David represented his country in three FIFA World Cups and remains synonymous with the intense rivalry against Argentina, particularly following his controversial red card for kicking Diego Simeone in 1998.

In an ironic twist of fate, the Argentinian squad that secured victory in Atlanta included Giuliano Simeone, the son of the man who clashed with Sir David 28 years ago. Despite the heartbreak of defeat, Sir David took to Instagram following the match to thank the team and fans, writing that the tournament provided «memories that inspire and last forever».

Sir David retired from professional football in 2013 and has since transitioned into team ownership, notably with U.S. club Inter Miami, where he helped orchestrate the arrival of Lionel Messi in 2023.
