U.S. President Donald Trump will attend the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain to present the victorious nation with the championship trophy.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the president’s upcoming appearance during a press briefing.

«His attendance will cap what has been the most watched, most secure and most successful World Cup in American history,» she said.

Leavitt added that the high-profile match serves as a fitting conclusion to an event that highlighted the ability of the United States to host the global community on the grandest stage.

The American leader will be joined by FIFA President Gianni Infantino for the post-match ceremony. This joint presentation follows established precedent from previous host nations, such as the 2022 tournament in Qatar where local leadership helped award the hardware.

Historic rivalry and a superstitious leader

The highly anticipated fixture will kick off at MetLife Stadium on Monday at midnight Uzbekistan time. This clash marks the first competitive international tournament meeting between the two sides in 60 years. During that previous major encounter, the South American squad secured a 2-1 victory over their European rivals.

Beyond major tournaments, the respective national teams have faced each other 13 times in friendly matches. Spain holds a slight historical advantage with six wins compared to five victories for Argentina, while two fixtures ended in a draw.

While Trump plans to watch the action from the VIP stands in New Jersey, his Argentine counterpart will not make the trip. President Javier Milei intends to support his squad from home, maintaining a personal viewing tradition he considers lucky for the team.

In a significant departure from tradition, FIFA will award championship rings to the World Cup winners for the very first time. The commemorative jewellery will be distributed to players and official team representatives, including the head coach. To capitalise on the milestone, world football’s governing body will also release more than 1,900 replica rings for public sale. Each commercial piece will be accompanied by an official certificate of authenticity.
