American actor Tom Cruise opened the 2026 World Cup final with a pre-match speech highlighting the tournament’s capacity to transcend cultural divides.

Addressing a packed MetLife Stadium before Spain and Argentina took the pitch, the «Mission: Impossible» star reflected on the 48-nation journey spanning three host countries. Cruise told spectators that the month-long competition proved the sport belongs to a global audience.

«Football is a language spoken without words. A force that unites people, that turns strangers into friends, and reminds us of what we all have in common.»

The championship game serves as the conclusion to the first iteration of the expanded 48-team tournament structure. Jointly organised by Canada, Mexico and the United States, matches took place across 16 metropolitan regions over the past month.

Cruise appeared as the headline speaker for a pre-kickoff ceremony coordinated by Balich Wonder Studio. The international entertainment line-up included British vocalist Robbie Williams, Italian performer Laura Pausini and American singer Nicole Scherzinger. Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson subsequently performed the U.S. national anthem prior to player introductions.

A tribute to collective sporting ambitions

Though only two squads reached the final match, Cruise noted that the collective experience belongs to every participating territory, athlete and fan base. He credited the event volunteers with maintaining operations throughout the sprawling tournament schedule.

«So as we gather for one final chapter, let us celebrate a tournament that brought the world together. Let us celebrate each other. This is football. This is unity. And this, this is greatness.»

On-field action commenced immediately after the presentation, with both teams playing to a scoreless deadlock during early play. The fixture will introduce the first halftime music performance in the tournament’s history. Organised by Coldplay leader Chris Martin, the interval segment will feature appearances by Madonna, Shakira, BTS and Justin Bieber.

U.S. President Donald Trump attended the match alongside an array of international dignitaries and public figures.
