Film star Kaylee Hottle, who rose to prominence playing Jia in Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise, has died aged 18 following a night-time car crash in rural Maryland.
Sheriff’s deputies in Frederick County responded to the scene on Windsor Road in Ijamsville shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday. Officers confirmed a 1995 Honda Accord carrying three individuals departed the roadway and impacted a concrete drain structure. Crash investigators determined that excessive velocity caused the driver, a 19-year-old male, to lose control.
Paramedics airlifted the young performer to a nearby trauma centre, though her heart ceased beating during transport. Medical staff treated the teenage driver for non-life-threatening injuries, whereas the second passenger refused hospital care. Law enforcement officials have not filed formal charges as the investigation remains open.
Confirming his daughter’s death via an online sign language broadcast, Joshua Hottle recounted travelling from Texas to Maryland upon hearing the news. Expressing forgiveness toward the young motorist, he urged the teenager to avoid letting guilt destroy his future. Officials at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, where Hottle was completing her final high school year, made grief counsellors available to her peers.
Rise to fame and acting milestones
A native of Atlanta raised within a multi-generational deaf household, Hottle began her career at age nine. Her earliest projects involved regional television spots alongside campaigns for Glide, an app tailored for deaf and hard-of-hearing users.
Her breakthrough came in 2021 when director Adam Wingard cast her as Jia, an orphaned native of Skull Island, in «Godzilla vs. Kong». Communicating strictly through sign language, her character became the emotional centre of the film. She returned for the 2024 blockbuster «Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire», earning a Saturn Award nomination for her performance.
Her screen credits also include a 2021 guest role as Joon in the «Magnum P.I.» reboot. Before her death, she had secured a role in the upcoming feature project «What Doesn’t Kill Us».

Hottle earned widespread acclaim for elevating deaf representation on screen. Production crews on her films, including co-star Alexander Skarsgard, learned American Sign Language to interact directly with her between takes.
Following news of her passing, «Godzilla» co-star Millie Bobby Brown posted an online tribute, while Oscar winners Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur shared messages honouring her legacy. Fellow deaf performer Alaqua Cox, scheduled to appear alongside Hottle in her next movie, expressed deep grief over the loss of a pioneering talent.
