Aston Martin has introduced a comprehensive B-spec upgrade package for the AMR26 ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix as the team seeks to salvage a dismal start to the 2026 season.

Instead of delivering minor improvements race-by-race, Adrian Newey and his engineering team elected to stockpile their development. The result is a heavily revised chassis that recently broke cover in the Budapest pit lane, featuring a complete aerodynamic overhaul aimed at lifting the squad from the back of the grid.

The radical changes include a new nose, extensively reworked aerodynamic surfaces and revised rear suspension architecture. According to paddock rumours highlighted by Cadillac driver Valtteri Bottas, the front suspension is reportedly the only structural component carried over from the original launch specification.

Beyond aerodynamics, a primary focus of the new package is severe weight reduction of about 30 kgs. The team required fresh crash testing and a new homologation process for the forward chassis to shed mass. This move quietly acknowledges that the car’s early-season deficit stemmed just as much from being overweight as it did from aerodynamic flaws.

Massive lap time projections

This aggressive development arrives at a critical juncture and internal simulation data suggests the gamble could yield staggering results. According to paddock estimates, Aston Martin’s best-case simulations project a lap time gain of up to 2.5 seconds.

Such an unprecedented leap in performance is necessary to close the gap with immediate competitors like Cadillac. During recent qualifying sessions, Aston Martin lagged more than two seconds behind their closest midfield rivals. If the new carbon fibre components correlate accurately with the team’s wind tunnel tools, the AMR26 could completely alter the grid order.

Trackside chief Mike Krack cautioned against viewing the Budapest updates as an instant cure, describing the rollout as merely one step in a prolonged development strategy. The team will spend the upcoming practice sessions running extensive back-to-back comparisons to ensure the real-world data matches their internal physics models.

The B-spec chassis forms the first half of Aston Martin’s recovery plan. Engine partner Honda is scheduled to introduce a major power unit upgrade at the Dutch Grand Prix following the summer break. The combination of improved chassis dynamics and enhanced engine performance represents the team’s primary hope to salvage their 2026 championship campaign.
