ChatGPT Returns Online After Major Weekend Service Disruption
OpenAI has restored its flagship conversational artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT following a widespread weekend disruption that locked out global users.
The technical difficulties began at approximately 5 a.m. ET (10 a.m. GMT) on Saturday, rendering users unable to log into their accounts or load previous chat histories. The incident prompted a massive spike in search traffic, with the phrase «Is ChatGPT down?» rapidly trending on Google as users sought answers for the sudden lack of access.
According to the tracking website DownDetector, more than 3,000 users logged issue reports during the morning. Data revealed that 79% of the complaints related directly to the web version of ChatGPT, while 9% affected the mobile application and 8% impacted Codex.
The outage extended beyond consumer-facing chatbots, effectively disrupting OpenAI’s application programming interfaces and its dedicated coding platform. An initial update on the company’s official status page confirmed the platform was experiencing issues and suffering from elevated error rates.
Engineers quickly applied a mitigation strategy, noting they were closely monitoring the recovery process. Just after midday, the company released a final update declaring all systems were fully operational once more. The firm stated it was not aware of any ongoing issues affecting its systems.
Rise of OpenAI and previous platform stability
OpenAI emerged as a dominant force in the technology sector following the public launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. The San Francisco-based research laboratory developed the sophisticated language model to generate human-like text, answer complex queries and write functional computer code based on conversational prompts.
The platform’s unprecedented growth sparked an industry-wide race to develop generative AI capabilities, attracting hundreds of millions of active weekly users who rely on the tool for both professional workflows and personal tasks.
Despite its massive infrastructure, the service is not immune to technical failures. The last significant global blackout occurred on June 4, 2024, when users experienced prolonged connection timeouts across web interfaces and mobile applications. Similar to Saturday’s incident, that previous disruption temporarily halted productivity for millions of professionals before engineers implemented a permanent fix.
