UN adopts Uzbekistan’s resolution on parliaments and social development
The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on July 24 aimed at enhancing the role of parliaments in accelerating social development. Initiated by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev the document secured co-sponsorship from 61 member states across all global regions.
Ulugbek Lapasov, Uzbekistan’s permanent representative to the UN, formally presented the draft resolution to the assembly. He framed the initiative as a direct contribution to global welfare and a crucial step in strengthening the parliamentary dimension of international relations.
Driving the 2030 agenda forward
The newly adopted resolution outlines how national parliaments serve as vital mechanisms for implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It urges governments worldwide to refine their domestic legislation to strengthen social protection systems, reduce poverty and ensure decent employment opportunities. The legislative framework also prioritises expanding public access to quality education and fostering broader social integration across diverse communities.
A significant portion of the text focuses on diversity and modernisation within legislative bodies themselves. The UN specifically highlighted the urgent need to expand the participation of women and youth in parliamentary activities and decision-making processes. Furthermore the resolution encourages lawmakers to harness digital transformation tools to benefit social development while simultaneously expanding international cooperation to support developing nations.
Member states are explicitly called upon to actively involve their parliaments in monitoring the implementation of sustainable development initiatives. This involves preparing voluntary national reviews and exercising strict parliamentary oversight over government commitments. The UN also recommended that countries improve their domestic statistical systems to better evaluate social progress and increase parliamentary engagement with civil society organisations.
Diplomatic efforts and global cooperation
The successful adoption followed extensive diplomatic negotiations led by Uzbekistan’s permanent mission in New York. Officials conducted numerous formal consultations and bilateral talks to draft a balanced text. This rigorous process ensured the final document aligned with universal UN principles while adequately addressing the diverse political interests of all participating member states.
The resolution also officially welcomed the upcoming 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union scheduled to take place in Tashkent. Delegates acknowledged the forthcoming Tashkent Declaration which will outline specific legislative actions required to promote social development and ensure social justice.
International observers view the consensus as a reflection of Uzbekistan’s rising diplomatic profile on the world stage. The successful resolution demonstrates the international community’s readiness to strengthen parliamentary cooperation as an essential tool for achieving inclusive global growth.
