The electronic music landscape has lost a foundational figure following the death of Vincent Pierre Claude Belorgey. Better known globally by his enigmatic alter ego Kavinsky, the producer was found dead at his Parisian residence on Tuesday. He was 50.
While law enforcement officials currently suspect no foul play, earlier reports indicated the musician suffered from severe head pain during his final days. Belorgey leaves behind a profound musical legacy, having almost single-handedly popularised the modern synthwave aesthetic through a meticulously crafted retro-futuristic sound.
From silver screen to studio decks
Born in Seine-Saint-Denis in 1975, Belorgey initially pursued a career in front of the camera rather than behind a mixing desk. His transition into music production only began around 2005, sparked by encouragement from his close creative circle, notably Jackson Fourgeaud and filmmaker Quentin Dupieux.
Belorgey famously owned a Ferrari Testarossa, which directly inspired his debut single «Testarossa Autodrive». After acting in Dupieux’s 2007 comedy «Steak», a project that also featured his original music, the director passed the automotive-themed track to his industry contacts. This vital connection landed the burgeoning artist a deal with the independent label Record Makers, launching a legendary run of EPs. He soon found himself touring alongside established electronic heavyweights like Justice, The Rapture and Daft Punk.
A cinematic masterpiece shatters records
Mainstream recognition finally arrived with his 2010 release «Nightcall». Co-produced by Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and mixed by SebastiAn, the track featured distinctive vocals from Brazilian singer Lovefoxxx. A year later, director Nicolas Winding Refn placed the brooding anthem over the opening credits of his thriller «Drive,» instantly cementing the song as a cultural touchstone.
The track’s cultural dominance experienced a massive revival over a decade later. During the closing ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, Kavinsky performed the hit live alongside Angèle and Phoenix. The spectacular broadcast triggered a global frenzy, causing the anthem to break records for the most Shazamed song in a single minute and the highest number of Shazams in a single day. A newly recorded studio version featuring the Olympic collaborators subsequently earned a diamond certification from France’s National Syndicate of Phonographic Publishing.
Cultivating an enduring aesthetic
Belorgey built an entire mythology around his stage persona, styling himself as an undead teenager who perished in a 1986 car crash only to return as a producer. This vivid storytelling culminated in his 2013 debut studio album, «OutRun». The record established a definitive sonic template blending 1980s pop nostalgia, arcade game samples and driving basslines that countless internet-era producers later adopted.
Following an extensive seven-year hiatus from the industry, he staged a highly anticipated comeback in late 2021. He teamed up with Gaspard Augé and Victor Le Masne to produce «Renegade,» the lead single for his 2022 sophomore album «Reborn». He followed this up with the atmospheric track «Zenith,» which featured vocal contributions from Prudence and Morgan Phalen. Although he deliberately operated outside the typical commercial pop sphere throughout his career, his visionary approach to electronic composition permanently altered the trajectory of modern dance music.
