Apple is experiencing supply constraints for its popular M5 MacBook Air, with retail shipments facing delivery delays that stretch into late August and September.

According to a report by Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, the Cupertino-based technology firm is struggling to maintain inventory levels across its global retail network, leaving customers facing extended wait times for custom hardware configurations.

The inventory bottleneck stems directly from an industry-wide memory chip shortage. Semiconductor manufacturers have redirected massive amounts of silicon production capacity toward high-bandwidth memory required for enterprise artificial intelligence data centres.

Consequently, market prices for dynamic random-access memory and solid-state storage components utilised inside consumer electronics have surged, impacting Apple’s primary volume driver alongside specialised machines like the Mac mini and Mac Studio.

Analysts note that the shift in consumer demand towards larger RAM allocations has lso exacerbated the pinch, as high-capacity memory modules remain the hardest components to secure from primary foundries.

Retail delays and marketing shifts

Online storefronts across the United States indicate delivery windows ranging from two to six weeks, while specific configurations with expanded RAM allocations face the longest delays. Retail store sources report that incoming stock allocations are scarcer than personnel can recall, disrupting typical consumer purchasing cycles just as families prepare for the autumn academic term.

Apple has implemented several operational adjustments to navigate the supply shortage. In June, the company introduced price increases across fourteen products, raising the baseline cost of the M5 MacBook Air in the United States from $1,099 to $1,299.

Marketing materials now carry disclaimers noting that the laptop remains subject to availability, while traditional back-to-school promotional campaigns experienced operational delays. Across both physical outlets and digital platforms, retail staff have been instructed to steer prospective buyers toward the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Supply chain adjustments and outlook

Industry insiders indicate that prioritising the 14-inch MacBook Pro line helps clear manufacturing channels ahead of an anticipated M6 hardware refresh scheduled for later in the year. Meanwhile, to alleviate domestic inventory pressures, Apple has initiated plans to source memory components from Chinese suppliers specifically for units distributed within mainland China.
