Streaming giant Amazon is working on a new animated show based on the tabletop game «Warhammer 40,000». The company is teaming up with Games Workshop and Blur Studios for the project. Henry Cavill will help guide the show as an executive producer. The British actor is also attached to star in a separate live-action version of the sci-fi franchise.
This new programme branches directly off from «Secret Level». That animated anthology series premiered on Prime Video in late 2024 and included a standalone story set in the Warhammer universe. Dave Wilson directed that specific episode and will now run the new spinoff series as its co-creator and director. He is writing the upcoming show with John Orloff. Orloff previously worked on massive war dramas like «Band of Brothers» and «Masters of the Air».
The Deathwatch storyline
The creators have not shared many details about the exact plot yet. However, they confirmed the story centres around The Deathwatch. In the game’s lore, this group is an elite faction of Space Marines who specialise in tracking down and fighting alien enemies across the galaxy.
Wilson said his team never meant for «Secret Level» to just be a collection of short stories. Instead, they wanted to use it to launch much bigger television projects. He mentioned that fans responded very well to the original episode because the creators respected the game’s deep history. The director added that he has waited over two decades to tell a longer story in this universe and thanked Amazon for the chance to do so.
Several other people will executive produce the series alongside Cavill and Wilson. The team includes «Secret Level» creator Tim Miller, Natalie Viscuso, Vertigo Entertainment‘s Roy Lee and Andy Smillie from Games Workshop.
Amazon continues to spend heavily on shows based on popular video games. The platform already airs a hit version of «Fallout» and is making a live-action «Tomb Raider» series with actress Sophie Turner.
The company is also creating a «God of War» show. Producers for that project are currently looking for a new lead actor after Ryan Hurst suffered a torn bicep on set. Other games like «Life Is Strange», «Mass Effect» and «Wolfenstein» are getting their own TV adaptations on the platform as well.
