Huawei has launched the MateBook Pro S, marking a significant hardware release for its HarmonyOS computer ecosystem. Weighing just 798 grams, the 14-inch notebook enters the market as one of the lightest full-featured laptops available, losing only to the Japanese Fujitsu Lifebook WU-X.
The device debuted during a new product technology conference on August 5 alongside the MateBook Fold PC. The MateBook Pro S achieves its lightweight profile through a magnesium-lithium alloy chassis that measures 11.9 millimetres thick. This engineering approach makes the Chinese manufacturer’s latest offering roughly 432 grams lighter than Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Air.
Huawei has equipped the laptop with a 14.2-inch flexible OLED screen featuring a 3:2 aspect ratio. The panel reaches a peak brightness of 1,600 nits to support high visibility in varied lighting environments. Consumers can select from five exterior colours, including a distinctive Vertical Purple finish.
The laptop’s price starts at ¥7999 ($1184).
Silicon performance and novel features
Internally, the notebook relies on the HiSilicon-designed Kirin XE90 processor. This ARM-based PC chip features 10 CPU cores capable of reaching speeds up to 2.45 GHz, prioritising high energy efficiency during demanding workloads.
Buyers have access to three primary memory configurations. The standard model includes 16GB of RAM. A PaperMatte Edition aimed at reducing screen glare comes with 24GB of RAM while a premium Collector’s variant offers 32GB of memory. Storage options range from 512GB to 1TB solid-state drives.
The laptop runs on HarmonyOS PC, integrating heavily with Huawei’s broader device network. A standout software addition is the Celia Task System, an artificial intelligence tool capable of generating websites, completing forms and drafting weekly reports. The HarmonyOS Connect feature further streamlines cross-device workflows by enabling one-tap Wi-Fi access and rapid file transfers.
Departing from standard laptop builds, the MateBook Pro S incorporates a three-camera design. Alongside a traditional webcam positioned above the display, the chassis houses two additional sensors on the rear of the lid. While the exact function of these rear-facing sensors remains unconfirmed, industry observers suggest they likely support upcoming AI-assisted photography or spatial computing features.
The physical design retains standard usability elements, including a large touchpad, a traditional black keyboard and a physical camera privacy shutter. Connectivity is handled by dual USB-C ports alongside support for the latest Wi-Fi 7 networking standards.
