At least 7 killed, 15 injured as school student goes on shooting spree in Thailand
A shooting at a secondary school in Thailand’s Nonthaburi province on Friday left at least 7 people killed and 15 injured, according to police and local media.
The incident occurred on Friday at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district, just north of the greater Bangkok area. Police said the suspected gunman was a student at the school and later died.
Nonthaburi Provincial Police Commander Lt Col. Dechrapee Kongdee said the incident wounded another teacher and three students.
The school has about 3,100 students and 147 teachers, based on figures from the 2025 academic year.
Initial reports from the Bangkok Post gave a higher casualty count, with two people reported dead and at least 10 injured while emergency crews were still responding to the scene. Authorities subsequently revised the figures as they assessed the situation.
Students leave campus after gunfire
The shooting triggered a major emergency response, with police and medical teams sent to the school and students evacuated from the premises.
One 18-year-old student told Reuters that he first mistook the sound of gunfire for firecrackers or an object being struck before realising what was happening.
Footage from the area showed students leaving the school as ambulances and emergency personnel arrived.
Police have not yet disclosed what prompted the attack or explained how the student came into possession of a firearm. Investigators are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The shooting comes months after another deadly attack at a Thai school. In February, a gunman opened fire at a school in Hat Yai district in southern Songkhla province, killing a teacher and wounding a student, according to Reuters.
The latest in a recent string of murders
Thailand has also experienced several other major shootings in recent years. One of the deadliest occurred in 2022, when an attack at a childcare centre in Nong Bua Lamphu province claimed dozens of lives, most of them children.
The latest shooting occurred in the densely populated area north of Bangkok, where the school serves thousands of students from surrounding communities.
Police are expected to provide further information as investigators establish the shooter’s background, the circumstances leading up to the attack and how the firearm was obtained.
Not far from the site, a separate incident recently killed two Russian siblings, and Thai authorities are investigating their deaths.
