WhatsApp users in several countries are reporting problems sending photos, videos and other media, although text messages continue to work for many. The scale of the disruption remains unclear, and WhatsApp has yet to publicly explain the problem.
Reports began appearing early on Monday, with users saying photos and videos were taking unusually long to send or becoming stuck during upload. Stickers, GIFs and larger media files have also been affected.
Users in India, the UK, France, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Spain and Colombia have reported problems. Some users tried restarting their phones, changing between Wi-Fi and mobile data or reinstalling WhatsApp without resolving the issue.
Downdetector data showed 41% of complaints related to messaging, 40% to the app itself and 13% to notifications. However, Downdetector figures are based on user reports and do not show how many WhatsApp users are actually affected
Previous WhatsApp blackouts
The latest disruption comes less than a week after another WhatsApp outage affected media sharing last Tuesday, when users reported being unable to send photos and other multimedia content. WhatsApp also faced a separate problem earlier this month that mistakenly placed some accounts under review, with Meta saying it was working to restore access.
WhatsApp has also been caught up in wider outages affecting parent company Meta. In December 2024, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads and WhatsApp suffered a major global disruption lasting several hours. Meta blamed a technical issue and later said its services were 99% restored, while Downdetector recorded thousands of WhatsApp outage reports.
