«Spider-Man: Brand New Day» swung into Central Asian cinemas on August 6, instantly shattering regional opening day records. The superhero blockbuster grossed over $1mn across five nations, driven by unprecedented ticket demand.

According to preliminary data from Ascar Cinema, the film earned $90,202 in Uzbekistan alone. The massive turnout translated to 15,838 admissions within 24 hours of its release. The nation secured the second-highest earnings among the Commonwealth of Independent States for the film’s debut. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan led the regional market by generating an impressive $789,370, dwarfing earlier projections.

Localised content has proven to be a significant draw for domestic audiences. Screenings dubbed in Uzbek accounted for 11.5% of the national box office on the very first day. This specific metric highlights a growing appetite for major Hollywood studio releases presented in the native language rather than relying exclusively on standard Russian dubs.

The dubbing in Kazakhstan went viral on social media for the creative approach. When Peter Parker arrives at the New Avengers headquarters in Brighton Beach to meet with Yelena Belova, he is met by a grandmother who speaks in Russian to him in the original dubbing. In the Kazakh version, instead of translating her speech, they left it in Russian, thus capturing laughs from the audience who can relate to Spider-Man.

A regional cinematic triumph

The commercial success extended well beyond the borders of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. When combining financial figures from Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, total opening day regional earnings reached a staggering $1,014,023. This milestone saw 199,838 cinemagoers flocking to local theatres. Examining the remaining territories shows strong results: Armenia secured $59,711, Kyrgyzstan contributed $55,921 and Tajikistan added $19,657.

Worldwide, the «Spider-Man: Brand New Day» earned more than $1.67bn.

Critics attribute a substantial part of this immediate success to the film’s fresh narrative direction. After several cinematic outings where the titular character was heavily dependent on the Avengers ensemble, «Brand New Day» returns Peter Parker to his independent, street-level roots. The storyline refocuses on his daily life as a friendly neighbourhood hero, resonating strongly with long-time comic enthusiasts.
