Germany’s new ambassador starts Uzbekistan posting
Matthias Vollert has formally begun his posting as Germany’s new ambassador to Uzbekistan, having presented copies of his credentials to Uzbek Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov.
«We highly value Germany as one of our reliable and time-tested partners in Europe. Recently, Uzbekistan–Germany relations have been steadily developing through high-level visits and regular political dialogue,» Saidov commented earlier on Wednesday.
The foreign minister and the new ambassador «discussed key issues on the bilateral agenda and emphasised the importance of the timely and effective implementation of the agreements reached at the highest level.»
Before moving to Tashkent, Vollert headed the German Foreign Office division responsible for the Southern Caucasus, Central Asia and Eastern Partnership from 2022 to 2026, giving him direct experience of the region he will now cover from Uzbekistan.
His earlier career included postings in Seoul and Skopje, work in the German Foreign Office’s economic and Europe departments and several years at Germany’s permanent representation to the EU in Brussels, where he dealt with EU finances and common security and defence policy.
Germany-Uzbekistan ties gain momentum
Vollert arrived shortly after German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Uzbekistan in June, when the two countries announced more than $1 billion in new trade and investment agreements. Uzbek officials said bilateral trade exceeded $1.4 billion in 2025, while German investment in Uzbekistan reached $2 billion.
Germany is Uzbekistan’s largest trading partner within the EU, according to the German Foreign Office. Around 220 companies with German participation operate in Uzbekistan, and cooperation has expanded into vocational training, migration, renewable energy, and education.
