Kyrgyz travellers get partial visa-free access to China
Kyrgyz passport holders can now visit the resort island of Hainan for up to 30 days without a visa and transit through much of China for 10 days. A wider transit waiver comes with one important condition: the journey must continue to a third country or region.
China added Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam to both schemes from 20 August, according to the country’s National Immigration Administration.
Regular passport holders of Kyrgyzstan may enter Hainan through any of the international ports of the island province and stay there visa-free for up to 30 days. The travel exemption applies to tourism, business, family visits and exchanges, but not to employment, study or journalism.
Kyrgyz travellers also qualify for China’s 240-hour visa-free transit programme, which covers 65 entry points across the country. To qualify, passengers must have a confirmed ticket from China to a third country or region. A Bishkek–Beijing–Tashkent journey could allow for such a trip, while a return trip from Kyrgyzstan to China and back would not.
Kyrgyzstan is the latest participant in a Hainan programme that already includes 61 countries. Kazakhstan was already a part of it, and Uzbek citizens can visit the island under their country’s wider visa-free deal with China.
Visa-free travel between Central Asia and China
The transit scheme allows tourism and business meetings and family visits in approved areas. It is not the same as visa-free travel: Kyrgyz citizens still need a Chinese visa for a normal mainland trip that does not meet the transit rules.

Only Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have full reciprocal agreements with China on visa-free travel in Central Asia. Their citizens can enter China for up to 30 days per visit, but not more than 90 days in any 180-day period, and Chinese travellers have reciprocal access.
Elsewhere the picture is more fragmented. Chinese citizens can stay in Tajikistan visa-free for up to 30 days, while Turkmenistan mostly requires visas both ways.
