George Russell takes F1 Zandvoort Sprint Pole

George Russell delivered when it mattered most to secure Sprint pole for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. The Mercedes driver triumphed in a breathless final segment of Sprint Qualifying to pip McLaren’s Lando Norris by a mere 0.041 seconds.
Margins of a hair’s breadth
The transition to the mandatory soft tyres for SQ3 saw the front-runners hold their nerve in the garages until the final four minutes. With track temperatures cooling down drivers opted for a double warm-up lap strategy to bring the red-marked rubber into the optimal operating window.
When the times finally tumbled it was Russell who hooked up the perfect lap. He clocked a 1:11.567 to claim the top spot. Norris followed closely in second while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took third just 0.055 seconds adrift of the ultimate pace. Oscar Piastri secured fourth ahead of championship leader Kimi Antonelli. The young Mercedes star could only manage fifth following a scruffy session that included an early trip through the gravel in SQ1. Home favourite Max Verstappen will start Saturday’s Sprint from sixth.
Stand-ins shine in the midfield
Further down the order a pair of returning faces delivered commendable performances. Liam Lawson who is replacing the injured Isack Hadjar at Red Bull narrowly missed out on SQ3 to finish 11th. Yuki Tsunoda followed closely in 12th on his return to Racing Bulls in cars they are still adapting to.
It was also a highly successful afternoon for Pierre Gasly. The Alpine driver qualified an impressive eighth and thoroughly validated a sweeping new upgrade package that team personnel estimate to be worth up to seven tenths of a second over his teammate. Gabriel Bortoleto for Audi and Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad rounded out the top 10.
Aston Martin and Williams stumble

The frantic 12-minute SQ1 session claimed several high-profile casualties. Fernando Alonso anchored the timing sheets in 22nd after a suspected straight-line mode failure caused a massive lock-up and ruined his tyres. His Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll fared marginally better in 19th.
Williams suffered another difficult outing as Carlos Sainz exited in 18th. The Cadillac duo of Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez also fell at the first hurdle alongside Haas driver Ollie Bearman.
