David Harbour may have just revealed one of the most closely guarded secrets of «Avengers: Doomsday». During an interview with Variety, the actor who portrays Red Guardian offered a quote from the upcoming film entirely out of context. Adopting his character’s heavy Russian accent, Harbour delivered a singular line:

«You … are Tony Stark».

The cryptic comment immediately raised questions about Robert Downey Jr.‘s highly anticipated return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since San Diego Comic-Con, the studio has insisted the former Iron Man actor is strictly playing the tyrannical villain Victor von Doom. Marvel’s recent marketing campaign, including a trailer premiered at Disney’s D23 event, leans heavily into the idea that Iron Man remains dead and Doom is an entirely separate entity.

Harbour’s statement directly challenges the prevailing narrative that Doom is simply a villain of Eastern European extraction. The simplest explanation is that the actor is expertly trolling audiences and that Stark does not feature in the film at all. However, the remark reignited widespread fan theories that Downey Jr.’s new character might actually be a corrupted multiversal variant of the fallen hero.

An administrative coincidence or a multiversal twist

The D23 footage repeatedly referred to the antagonist as Victor while hinting at his tragic history, seemingly establishing him as a fully fledged standalone character. We even hear Doom speaking with a heavily accented voice. Yet bringing back the actor who served as the face of the MCU for 11 years to wear a different metal mask has always invited suspicion. Audiences are unlikely to accept the physical resemblance as a mere administrative coincidence.

Some eagle-eyed fans analysing the recent trailer noted that a close-up of the masked villain appeared to show blue eyes rather than Downey Jr.’s natural brown. This slender piece of evidence spawned theories suggesting there may be two incarnations of the character: Downey Jr.’s version presented initially as an ally and a nastier variant who eventually eliminates him.

Acknowledging the elephant in the room

Even if the theory proves inaccurate, Harbour’s leaked dialogue sounds plausible within the established universe. Red Guardian is not an authority on interdimensional metaphysics. If confronted by a man sharing Stark’s exact face, Alexei pointing out the resemblance is a perfectly natural reaction. This scenario would allow Marvel to acknowledge the obvious visual connection without turning its newest supervillain into a resurrected Iron Man.

Whether Harbour accidentally blurted out a massive plot twist or simply invented the most provocative line imaginable for a laugh remains unknown. Marvel is famously protective of its secrets, having previously forced actors like Andrew Garfield to completely deny their involvement in major crossover events. The studio must now deliver on the rampant speculation it has courted since bringing Downey Jr. back into the fold.
