
Samsung could be preparing a significant change to the display protection on its next flagship, with a new leak claiming the Galaxy S27 Ultra may use a self-healing surface coating developed with Corning.
According to tipster Schrödinger (@phonefuturist), Samsung and Corning are working on a new version of Gorilla Armor designed not only to withstand scratches but also to recover from some minor damage. The claim was posted on X and has since been picked up by several Samsung-focused outlets.
The technology would reportedly target everyday micro-scratches rather than deeper marks caused by significant impacts or sharp objects. In practical terms, the surface could gradually restore its appearance after the type of light scratching that normally accumulates through regular use.
Neither Samsung nor Corning has confirmed the development, so the reported coating should be treated as an unverified leak rather than a confirmed Galaxy S27 Ultra feature.
From scratch resistance to scratch recovery
Samsung and Corning have already positioned Gorilla Armor as a key part of the Galaxy Ultra’s display technology.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra was the first Samsung phone to use Gorilla Armor, combining improved scratch resistance with an anti-reflective surface. Corning described the material as offering substantially better resistance to surface damage than conventional cover glass while also reducing reflections. The technology has subsequently remained part of Samsung’s Ultra strategy.
A self-healing layer would take a different approach.
Rather than relying solely on a harder surface to prevent damage, the proposed technology would allow the outer coating to repair certain types of minor scratches after they occur. That could help preserve the phone’s appearance over a longer period, particularly for users who do not use a screen protector.
The exact mechanism has not been disclosed. It is also unclear whether the proposed material would heal at room temperature, require heat or light, or simply allow shallow marks to disappear gradually through the properties of the coating.
Most importantly, there is no indication that such a surface could restore deep scratches or chips in the underlying glass.
Galaxy S27 Ultra already surrounded by upgrade rumours
The reported coating is only one of several changes tipped for Samsung’s 2027 flagship.
The Galaxy S27 Ultra is currently expected to arrive in early 2027, with February widely cited as the likely announcement window. The phone remains unannounced and Samsung has not confirmed its specifications.
Recent leaks have pointed to a possible 5,700mAh silicon-carbon battery, although other reports have suggested a more conservative capacity of around 5,200mAh to 5,500mAh. Samsung has already introduced silicon-carbon batteries in its 2026 foldable devices, making wider adoption in the S27 family plausible.
Camera changes have also been widely reported. Some leaks claim Samsung could move to a 200MP main sensor alongside 50MP ultrawide and telephoto cameras, while potentially removing one of the current telephoto units. Other reports have suggested a redesigned camera arrangement.
The phone is also expected to use Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro in at least some markets, while a new Galaxy S27 lineup could include a fourth model positioned between the standard handset and the Ultra.
