Emma Coronel has publicly criticised television portrayals of her marriage to Joaquin «El Chapo» Guzman, dismissing the dramatised versions of their wedding as completely fabricated.
During a recent Kick livestream with content creators Lonche and Willito, the former beauty queen shared rare details about her relationship with the notorious former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel. She specifically asked viewers to ignore the exaggerated scenes featured in popular streaming series and films because they routinely invent ridiculous narratives.
A quiet family gathering
Coronel married the drug lord in 2007 when she turned 18 and he was 50. Contrary to the lavish cartel celebrations often depicted by the entertainment industry, she insisted the actual ceremony was a deeply intimate affair.
The wedding took place at her remote childhood ranch in La Angostura, located within the mountainous Canelas municipality of Durango. Coronel clarified that the guest list was strictly limited to close relatives. She firmly denied long-standing rumours of famous live bands, corrupt public officials or other criminal figures attending the event.
«I lived on a ranch with difficult access. We got married at my house in private,» Coronel explained during the broadcast.
She added that seeing fictionalised accounts of the day makes her cringe because scriptwriters simply invent scenarios without any factual basis.
She reinforced these claims by referencing a 2019 interview with Telemundo where she stated Guzman never held meetings with politicians in her presence. She stressed that no government officials were present when they exchanged vows.
Media fabrications and public life
Coronel also expressed frustration with the broader media landscape during the livestream. She pointed out that becoming a public figure means people feel entitled to create baseless stories about her life. While she acknowledged the ability to sue for defamation or issue public denials, she noted that the constant stream of fabricated news is exhausting.
She highlighted an unauthorised biography featuring her on the cover and questioned the author’s credibility. According to Coronel, the writer spent only a single day with her before publishing a book that falsely claimed to reveal deep secrets about her personal life.
Meeting on the dance floor
The broadcast provided a rare glimpse into how the couple first crossed paths. Coronel recalled encountering Guzman at a local gathering while she was still a minor.
Both were on the dance floor with different partners. Guzman mistakenly believed Coronel had smiled at him across the room, though she was actually laughing with a friend. Once the song ended, they found themselves face-to-face and he politely asked for a dance.
Coronel described his initial approach as highly respectful. She noted that he acted entirely like a gentleman and subsequently began sending her flowers to win her affection. They continued to see each other until their marriage. The couple eventually welcomed twin daughters, Emali and Maria, who were born in the United States in 2011.
