Global music phenomenon Lalisa Manoban has pulled back the curtain on the rigid constraints of the South Korean entertainment machine, admitting she was forced to conceal past romances to safeguard her group’s standing.

The candid admissions headline «Always Lalisa», a feature-length documentary charting her recent independent pursuits. Directed by filmmaker Sue Kim, the project is slated for an opening gala screening at the Toronto International Film Festival ahead of a wider autumn theatrical run and subsequent streaming launch on YouTube Premium.

Within the cinematic project, the performer addresses the immense public scrutiny that defines the idol ecosystem.

«In K-pop culture, we can’t date,» the singer states in the feature. «If you’re seeing someone and you get caught by paparazzi, your popularity drops. When I was younger, I had a few relationships, but we had to hide when we’re dating. I didn’t want my dating to be the thing that hurts Blackpink’s popularity».

Breaking away from trainee system

The narrative also revisits her formative years following her relocation from Thailand to Seoul in 2011 to join the YG Entertainment stable as a young teenager. Archival sequences capture her recounting the gruelling monthly evaluations that dominated her adolescent routine, noting that she suppressed her personal opinions for years.

Stepping outside the group dynamic provided an unprecedented sense of autonomy. «I finally get to live my life,» she remarks in the film, contrasting her current independence with the silence of her early career.

This period of introspection heavily shaped her solo discography. She disclosed that the track «Dream», included on her recent album «Alter Ego», draws directly from a covert relationship.

According to the star, she consulted the former partner beforehand, securing clearance to release the composition on the strict condition that their anonymity remained intact.

Dismissing ongoing internet theories regarding the subject’s identity, she maintained a light-hearted stance.

«They thought they figured it out, but I don’t think so,» she noted.
