Xbox snatches Hideo Kojima’s Physint from Sony PlayStation
Following Sony PlayStation‘s unexpected withdrawal from the project earlier this year, Microsoft Xbox has stepped in to acquire the global publishing rights for «Physint», the upcoming action-espionage title directed by Hideo Kojima.
The Japanese game designer revealed that PlayStation abruptly notified his studio of the cancellation in mid-June. Kojima Productions spent the subsequent three months seeking a new corporate partner to save the spiritual successor to «Metal Gear Solid» before reaching an agreement with Microsoft.
Asha Sharma, chief executive officer of Xbox, confirmed the acquisition on Thursday. This deal deepens the gaming giant’s collaboration with Kojima’s independent development studio, which is already creating the exclusive horror title «OD» for Microsoft platforms.
Major realignment in platform exclusives
This transition represents a notable strategic shift in console rivalries. «Physint» was originally unveiled at a 2024 PlayStation State of Play broadcast, where PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst joined Kojima on stage to celebrate their partnership. Sony subsequently issued a brief statement acknowledging its departure, citing a difficult decision made after careful review while insisting it retains high regard for the director’s artistic vision.
Mere moments after Sony publicised its exit, Sharma announced a fresh publishing arrangement. The executive highlighted that developers retain full autonomy in choosing where to realise their creative ideas, expressing pride in aligning Kojima’s ambitious concept with the Xbox platform.
The expanded alliance between Microsoft and Kojima Productions extends beyond interactive console software to encompass potential adaptations across film, television and broader digital entertainment. Kojima has previously described «Physint» as a hybrid creation that combines elements of traditional video games and cinematic features.
Although the title remains early in its development cycle, casting speculation has already gathered momentum online, with fans linking actor Robert Pattinson to the project alongside confirmed cast member Charlee Fraser.
