The global video game industry is projected to generate $213.9bn in revenue in 2026, marking a 6.1% year-on-year increase across all major regions and platforms.

According to Newzoo’s Global Games Market Report 2026, mobile gaming remains the dominant force while the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to salvage the console sector from stagnation.

Mobile platforms will account for the largest market share at $121.1bn, growing by 6.8% despite a decline in overall app downloads. This expansion relies heavily on increased spending per user and publishers shifting toward direct-to-consumer digital shopfronts.

The PC gaming sector is projected to generate $45.9bn, growing by 5.3%. However, the report highlights that rising memory and component costs pose a major obstacle to continued hardware upgrades and PC market expansion.

Console market relies on single blockbuster

Console revenue is forecast to reach $46.9bn, representing a 5.1% rise from the previous year. Analysts attribute this growth almost entirely to Rockstar Games’ scheduled release of Grand Theft Auto VI in November. Without this specific title, the console segment would face a year-on-year decline, driven by shifting player habits and lagging hardware sales.

The game is expected to trigger a 17.5% surge in full-game spending. Furthermore, PlayStation is currently leading renewed growth in console players while declining sales of Nintendo’s original Switch are offsetting much of the increase created by its successor.

The global gaming audience will expand by 4.4% to reach 3.7bn players this year. Emerging markets are driving most of the growth, with the Middle East and Africa expanding the fastest.

The Asia-Pacific region retains the largest player base while the US and China collectively account for 52% of all global consumer spending. Microtransactions are expected to regain their position as the largest overall business model although premium and mid-priced releases will continue to sustain full-game revenues.

However, the report indicates that overall player growth is slowing and is expected to ease to a 3.2% compound annual growth rate through 2029. With market penetration flattening at 62% of the total online population, companies must pivot their strategies.
