An aircraft passing over New York Harbour created an unexpected optical illusion on Wednesday evening, appearing to fly directly through a giant drone formation of the World Trade Center during a memorial event.
The plane appeared to hit one of the glowing towers as it crossed behind the illuminated skyline outline, according to spectator footage shared on social media. Due to its striking resemblance to the commemorated events, the unexpected visual moment sparked online commentary.
Event organisers clarified that there was no indication the aircraft was part of the show or had deliberately entered the drone airspace. The dramatic effect arose entirely from line-of-sight perspective, ground viewing angles, and the position of the plane relative to the floating drone fleet.

Survivors and families shape aerial homage
A vast swarm of glowing quadcopters took to the sky to symbolise every individual lost during the 2001 disaster. This airborne collective first drifted like a cluster of stars across the waterfront. Moments later, the hovering devices shifted formation to recreate the exact architectural dimensions of the destroyed skyscrapers.
Creators collaborated closely with those directly affected by the terror attacks, bringing together relatives of the deceased and rescue workers who responded that morning. The resulting tribute offered a poignant civic remembrance explicitly meant to honour those who perished.
This technological demonstration complemented the city’s established «Tribute in Light.» That recurring municipal tradition beams dual shafts of illumination upward from the Financial District.
The display came as the nation prepared for the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, which claimed nearly 3,000 lives after hijacked commercial airliners were flown into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, while a fourth aircraft crashed in Pennsylvania. Memorial ceremonies are scheduled across the United States for September 11.
