Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max and Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra both start at $1,299 for 256GB of storage, making their rivalry a direct comparison of what buyers get for the same money.
Both phones use 6.9-inch displays, offer premium processors and sit at the top of their respective conventional smartphone ranges. Their similarities end quickly once you consider cameras, authentication and software.
Apple has begun accepting iPhone 18 Pro Max pre-orders ahead of retail availability on September 18. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra has already had several months to establish itself, giving buyers more independent testing and the possibility of retailer discounts.
Samsung wins on weight and photographic reach

The 35-gram weight difference may be more noticeable in daily use than most processor or camera figures. Samsung’s phone is also thinner at 7.9mm, compared with 8.75mm for the iPhone, according to Engadget’s specification comparison.
Samsung has a 200-megapixel main camera, 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and 3x and 5x telephoto cameras. That arrangement gives it more flexibility for distant subjects, while 8K recording gives users who can handle larger files more resolution.
S Pens are another clear distinction. It can be used for notes, precise selections, and remote camera control in the Galaxy S26 Ultra. The Pro Max lacks stylus support from Apple.
Apple counters with video and variable aperture
Apple equips the iPhone with three 48-megapixel rear cameras. Its headline addition is a mechanical variable aperture on the main camera, allowing the lens to adjust how much light reaches the sensor.
Dolby Vision video is recorded at 4K and 120 fps on the iPhone. Samsung has higher headline resolution, but Apple’s strength is consistent video capture and editing app integration.
Apple uses the 2-nanometre A20 Pro chip, and Samsung uses Qualcomm‘s 3-nanometre Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Manufacturing size does not determine phone speed. Real-world testing will emphasise performance, cooling, and software optimisation.

The Pro Max can play video for 45 hours, according to Apple. The manufacturers of both phones claim a 50% charge in 15 minutes with compatible wired equipment. These figures were tested under different conditions and should not be used as a battery benchmark.
Better choice depends on ecosystem
Lighter, with two telephoto cameras and the S Pen, the Galaxy S26 Ultra offers more hardware for the price. It’s better for buyers who photograph distant subjects, customise their interface, or want more control over file handling and default apps.
Mac users, Apple Watch users, AirPod users, and iCloud users should consider the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Its more distinctive main-camera upgrade may appeal to users who value video over extreme zoom.
Nor phone wins automatically. Samsung offers more visible hardware features at $1,299, while Apple focuses on silicon, video, and the device ecosystem.
