Christian Horner fuels Ferrari talk as pressure builds on Fred Vasseur
Christian Horner has made one of his clearest statements yet about a possible return to Formula One, naming Ferrari as the rare team that could persuade him to take another senior role without an ownership stake.
The former Red Bull team principal told The Times that Ferrari was Formula One’s biggest brand and described the prospect of working for the Italian team as «the dream.» His comments have landed at an awkward moment for current Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur, whose future has become the subject of renewed speculation after another difficult stretch of the 2026 season.
Horner has previously suggested that any F1 comeback would need to involve ownership rather than another conventional team principal position. Ferrari appears to be the exception.
The timing has amplified the story, although it does not necessarily indicate that negotiations are under way. RacingNews365 reported that Horner’s interview was conducted in early September, before the latest speculation surrounding Vasseur intensified during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend. Ferrari has not announced plans to replace Vasseur or confirmed talks with Horner.
Vasseur pushes back as Ferrari faces renewed scrutiny
Vasseur responded directly to the speculation after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Charles Leclerc finished fourth and Lewis Hamilton sixth.
The Frenchman said repeated questions about his position were disrupting Ferrari’s working environment and dismissed Horner’s comments as those of someone seeking his next role.
The pressure comes despite Vasseur signing a multi-year contract extension with Ferrari in 2025. He has led the team since the start of 2023 and remains in charge as Ferrari attempts to recover from a championship challenge that has lost momentum during the second half of the season.
Horner would arrive with one of the strongest management records of the modern F1 era. During two decades at Red Bull, he oversaw eight drivers’ championships and six constructors’ titles before Red Bull dismissed him in July 2025. Since leaving the team, he has been linked to several potential routes back into Formula One.
His name has also been connected with Ferrari before. The renewed attention, however, is more significant because Horner himself has now publicly identified Maranello as the one major exception to his preference for an ownership role.
Former Ferrari boss warns against another leadership reset
Not everyone with experience inside Ferrari believes hiring Horner would address the team’s problems.
Former team principal Maurizio Arrivabene, who led Ferrari from 2014 to 2019, warned against expecting a high-profile appointment to produce an immediate turnaround.
Arrivabene told Sky Sport Italia that «one man alone cannot change things» at Ferrari. He argued that Horner’s championship record could actually increase expectations around the team and said Ferrari instead needed stability, management freedom and a broader rebuilding process.
Ferrari and Domenicali react to rumours
Ferrari has issued a public vote of confidence in team principal Fred Vasseur after Christian Horner’s comments about potentially joining the Italian team intensified speculation over its Formula One leadership.
The Scuderia said on September 29 that it has «full confidence» in Vasseur and his team, an unusually direct intervention after days of reports linking former Red Bull team principal Horner with Maranello. Ferrari added that its position had not changed and that the company had already made its leadership choices.
Formula One president and chief executive Stefano Domenicali, who ran Ferrari from 2008 to 2014, warned the team against looking for what he called «fanciful solutions» during a difficult period.
Speaking to RAI Radio 1, Domenicali said Ferrari needed to remain strong and united when results were below expectations rather than risk abandoning its current project and losing further ground.
He also backed Vasseur to maintain direction through the pressure, arguing that the team principal must have a clear understanding of how Ferrari intends to return to winning consistently.
For now, Vasseur remains Ferrari’s team principal, and Horner remains outside Formula One. What has changed is Horner’s position: after months of questions about what could tempt him back, he has publicly identified Ferrari as the exception.
