Google Cloud expects affected services to recover during the afternoon of October 20 after a major outage disrupted Revolut, British banks and other online platforms across Europe. However, Revolut has yet to announce when all its banking services will return to normal.

The disruption was caused by a power failure affecting Google’s London data centre, known as europe-west2. Engineers have mitigated the underlying problem, allowing recovery work to begin, according to Google’s service updates.

Google’s latest recovery estimate pointed to approximately 2 p.m. BST / 3 p.m. CET for the restoration of affected workloads.

However, the estimate is provisional and does not guarantee that every website or application relying on Google Cloud will immediately resume normal operations.

Some services may take longer to recover as companies restore connections, restart systems and check their infrastructure.

When will Revolut be working normally?

Revolut has not provided a specific restoration time.

Its official system status page continues to show 30 services as partially unavailable, including card payments, bank transfers, ATM withdrawals, currency exchange and stock trading.

Customers have also experienced problems signing into accounts and accessing other banking features.

«We can confirm that all our customers’ money and data are safe,» Revolut said in a statement, adding that its teams were working to resolve the disruption.

Because Revolut’s problems are linked to Google’s infrastructure, restoring the affected cloud services is an important step towards recovery. However, Revolut must confirm that its own systems are functioning normally before the outage can be considered resolved.

Which other services have been affected?

The outage has disrupted several major organisations, particularly in the United Kingdom.

Lloyds Bank, Halifax, HSBC and Bank of Scotland have experienced reported banking problems, while ING Germany has acknowledged technical difficulties affecting online banking and its mobile application.

Outside the financial sector, disruptions have been reported at Royal Mail, delivery company DPD, property platform Rightmove and parts of Britain’s public services.

The outage has also affected remote court hearings in England and Wales. Not every reported disruption has been individually confirmed as directly caused by Google Cloud.

Google said the incident began at approximately 6:08 a.m. GMT on October 20, resulting in elevated error rates and intermittent network failures across multiple cloud products.

Although the power problem has been mitigated, Google’s incident dashboard still needs to confirm complete service restoration.

For now, customers experiencing payment problems should check their transaction history before attempting the same payment again to avoid potential duplicate charges.
