The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim can now be installed and played more easily on Apple Silicon Macs through a new unofficial tool called SkyrimMT, which also provides built-in support for mods.

The open-source application simplifies the process of running Bethesda’s 2011 role-playing game on Macs powered by Apple’s M-series processors, according to MacRumors.

Skyrim has never received an official macOS release, forcing Mac users to rely on third-party compatibility software or alternative installation methods. SkyrimMT combines these steps into a single application.

The tool automatically installs the necessary compatibility software and guides players through signing into Steam and downloading their copy of the game. It supports both Skyrim Special Edition and Anniversary Edition.

Unlike a native port, SkyrimMT runs the Windows version using Wine. It also uses DXMT to translate Direct3D 11 graphics into Apple’s Metal graphics framework.

How to install Skyrim on Mac

Players need an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS Ventura 13 or later, approximately 25 GB of available storage and a copy of Skyrim purchased through Steam.

The SkyrimMT application is available free of charge through its official GitHub repository.

Beyond installation, the software includes a native mod manager that allows users to browse Nexus Mods, install Nexus Collections and Wabbajack modlists and import existing Mod Organizer 2 configurations.

It also supports popular modifications such as Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) and SkyUI.

Players can create separate mod profiles, manage installation conflicts, organise load orders and restore previous configurations using snapshots.

Previously, Mac users could install Windows through Boot Camp on Intel-based computers or run the game using compatibility tools such as CrossOver. However, Apple Silicon Macs do not support Boot Camp, making third-party solutions necessary.

SkyrimMT does not represent an official Mac release from Bethesda, but it offers a more straightforward way to play and customise the game without manually configuring multiple applications.
