Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, introducing new movement mechanics, weapon customisation options and multiplayer maps that could change how players approach combat.

Developed by Infinity Ward, the latest instalment returns to more grounded combat while expanding players’ control over climbing, sliding and positioning.

Ahead of the launch, IGN published a guide highlighting several mechanics that players should master before entering multiplayer matches.

The biggest changes involve using movement to gain an advantage, improving accuracy at close range and adapting weapon builds to different situations.

Movement tricks that could give players an advantage

One of the most significant additions is mantle cancelling, which allows players to interrupt a climbing animation before reaching the top of an obstacle.

The technique makes it possible to peek over cover, identify enemy positions and retreat without exposing the entire character.

Players can also aim while hanging from ledges or climbing pipes, opening opportunities to surprise opponents from unexpected angles.

Another new technique is the Supine Slide. By double-tapping the crouch button while sprinting, players can perform a longer slide that ends with their character lying on their back, facing forward.

The movement can disrupt an opponent’s aim by changing the player’s position during a gunfight.

Infinity Ward has also introduced smoother transitions between sliding and climbing, allowing players to maintain momentum when crossing obstacles.

However, tactical sprinting now involves a more noticeable fatigue system. Characters gradually lose speed and change posture as stamina decreases, making shorter bursts of movement potentially more effective than sprinting continuously across the map.

Weapon changes and new multiplayer features

Modern Warfare 4 removes weapon bloom, a mechanic that previously introduced randomness into hip-fire accuracy.

Bullets now follow the direction of the weapon more consistently, although recoil, movement and weapon handling still affect precision.

This makes firing without aiming down sights a more viable option during close-range encounters, particularly with shotguns and submachine guns.

Weapon customisation has also expanded through the new Gunny system, which automatically selects attachments based on a preferred playstyle.

Players can modify these recommendations or generate alternative combinations rather than building every weapon configuration manually.

Another addition is Apex Attachments, powerful upgrades unlocked by fully levelling specific weapons.

Unlike ordinary attachments, these can significantly change weapon behaviour without occupying one of the standard five attachment slots.

For example, the KG-7 Vulcan gains a drill-charge attachment designed to force enemies out of cover, while the ISO Nightshade receives specialised ammunition capable of tracking targets.

The game also introduces Kill Block, a multiplayer battleground that rearranges sections of its layout between rounds.

With more than 500 possible configurations at launch, players will need to adapt to changing sightlines, routes and cover positions instead of memorising a single map.

According to Activision, Modern Warfare 4 launches with 20 multiplayer maps, 33 weapons and more than a dozen game modes.

The developer has also introduced a dedicated Proving Grounds training course, where players can practise movement techniques before entering competitive matches.

For returning Call of Duty players, the main adjustment will be learning to combine the new traversal mechanics with more deliberate weapon handling and positioning.
