Players will be able to explore much of the GTA 6 open world relatively early in the game, without having to complete lengthy story missions to unlock new areas, Rockstar Games has confirmed.

The upcoming title will allow players to travel freely across Leonida, the fictional US state inspired by Florida, with more buildings to enter and activities to discover than in previous instalments.

The details emerged from interviews with Rockstar developers published in the latest issue of Edge magazine.

Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said the studio wanted players to explore the world independently rather than follow a predetermined sequence of missions.

Unlike some earlier open-world games that restricted access to certain regions until players reached specific points in the story, GTA 6 will offer considerable freedom from the early stages.

The game takes place primarily in Vice City and the surrounding areas of Leonida. According to Edge, its landmass is nearly as large as the playable worlds of GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined.

More buildings to explore and hidden activities to discover

Rockstar has also significantly increased the number of buildings players can enter.

Aaron Garbut, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told Edge that GTA 6 features “an order of magnitude more interiors» than the studio’s previous games.

These locations feel occupied, with details that reflect the people who live or work there. Garbut said he was still encountering buildings he had never previously explored, despite his involvement in developing the game.

Nelson previously told IGN that the game’s size means even Rockstar’s developers have not experienced everything it contains.

«The game is so big, I don’t know that there’s anybody on the team that knows all of it,» he said in an interview published on 7 October.

He explained that new dialogue and activities were still being added during development, sometimes surprising him during gameplay.

Many discoveries will also take place outside the main storyline. Unlike traditional missions, some encounters will appear naturally as players explore, without markers directing them to specific locations.

Nelson compared this approach to Red Dead Redemption 2, where players could encounter unexpected events while travelling through the world.

«If you take a bit of time and explore, you will be rewarded – a lot,» he told.

Rockstar has also designed GTA 6 to offer activities beyond its main criminal storyline, including wildlife exploration, kayaking, scuba diving and other recreational pursuits.

GTA 6 is scheduled for release on 19 November 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC release date has not been announced.
