YouTube may be developing a new social media app that would allow users to share posts, exchange private messages and interact with followers, according to features discovered in the platform’s Android code.

Android Authority reportedly uncovered the project, called Tamba, while examining version 21.44.534 of the YouTube app. The publication found references to a separate application with its own logo, interface and social networking features.

Unlike the existing YouTube platform, which focuses primarily on watching and uploading videos, Tamba appears designed around direct communication between users.

The discovered code suggests people could follow one another, send private messages, create group chats and share photographs or videos.

Users might also be able to make their profiles private and approve follower requests, similar to Instagram. Android Authority identified 38 new icons associated with the project, including symbols for messaging, searching, creating content and recording audio.

The app also appears to have its own visual identity, with a hand-drawn logo featuring a play button.

Will YouTube launch Tamba as a separate app?

Despite the discovery, it remains unclear whether Tamba will become a publicly available product.

Researchers found references to an application called «com.google.android.youtube.sandbox,» suggesting that Google could be using it to test new features before introducing them to YouTube.

The code also contains references to Android and iOS versions, indicating that Google may be considering the experience for both operating systems.

Some features resemble those of Instagram and other social networks. Users could potentially reply to posts with voice messages or YouTube Shorts and react to comments using hearts.

One unusual feature suggests people might be able to follow an account before its owner has officially joined the platform.

The discovery comes as YouTube expands messaging capabilities within its existing app. The company has already begun introducing private conversations and previously announced plans to add group chats.
