The next-generation BMW iX3 has been spotted on the streets of Shanghai during road trials, CarNewsChina reports.

Photos shared by a CarNewsChina reader show the camouflaged SUV near a BMW facility in the city centre. Despite the disguise, its slim headlights, sculpted rear fenders and proportions confirmed its link to the Neue Klasse X concept revealed in 2024.

The model will make its global debut at IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich this September. Production is set to start in Hungary at BMW’s new Debrecen plant before expanding to China, where demand for premium EVs is surging. Sales of the current iX3 have been modest, with 8,475 units sold in China from January to July 2025 compared to nearly 40,000 petrol-powered X3s.

Design and Technology

Key details include retractable door handles, aerodynamic wheel covers, a short tailgate and a roof spoiler. Inside, the SUV will feature a panoramic vision head-up display spanning the dashboard, complemented by an additional HUD with core driving data.

BMW confirmed that the top-trim iX3 50 xDrive will offer 800 km of range under WLTP standards (900 km CLTC, 640 km EPA). With an 800V system with 400 kW charging power, it can recover 350 km of range in 10 minutes.

The new model will surpass the current iX3’s 210 kW output and add an optional dual-motor all-wheel-drive version. Chinese tech firm Momenta is developing an AI-powered driving solution to provide navigation-assisted driving in urban and motorway conditions.

Competition in China

Larger than its predecessor but smaller than the BMW X5, the new iX3 will face tough rivals such as Xiaomi’s YU7, which boasts 830 km of range and up to 681 hp, with nearly 300,000 orders placed in its first hour of launch.

BMW has confirmed the iX3 will be produced in Hungary, while the related i3 saloon will roll out of Germany.
