Sydney Sweeney will keep the spotlight firmly on her latest film when she arrives at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, September 5. The actress stars in Christy, David Michôd’s biopic about professional boxer Christy Martin, and says she intends to discuss only her preparation and collaboration for the role.
«I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I’m not there to talk about jeans,» Sweeney told Vanity Fair ahead of the premiere.
The star has faced criticism over her American Eagle campaign launched earlier this summer, which was accused of echoing eugenics through the tagline «Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans/Genes.» Despite the controversy, the brand reported sell-out sales of her namesake jacket and jeans, with proceeds directed to the Crisis Text Line. American Eagle later clarified the campaign «is and always was about the jeans.»
This is the second promotional tour clouded by the debate. During the U.S. release of Americana, Sweeney and co-star Halsey avoided press questions, with Halsey stressing the importance of keeping attention on director Tony Tost’s work.
Rolling Stone has already listed Christy among the festival’s most anticipated premieres, highlighting Sweeney’s transformation into Martin and her intensive training for the role. Ben Foster features alongside her as the boxer’s manager and husband Jim Martin.
