South African DJ Warrick Stock, known as DJ Warras, was shot dead in Johannesburg on Tuesday, deepening concerns over crime in the country.
Police said the 40-year-old was approached by three suspects, one of whom opened fire before fleeing on foot. Stock was attacked near Zambesi House after supervising security installations. He tried to escape but collapsed, carrying an unused firearm and losing nothing to the attackers. No arrests have been made.
Stock’s sister, Nicole, described the family as «shattered» and urged the public not to share graphic images or videos.
A prominent radio and TV presenter, podcaster, and host of Ngicel’ iVisa, Stock also ran private security, event protection and property management ventures.
His death prompted tributes from fans, government officials and media colleagues. Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie called him courageous, while Build One party leader Mmusi Maimane condemned the «brazen daylight murder.» Mzansi Magic praised his charisma, warmth and lasting creative impact.
South Africa continues to face high murder rates, with around 63 killings per day between April and September, driven by robbery and gang violence.
