The children of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele have spoken publicly for the first time following their deaths and the arrest of their brother, Nick Reiner.

Jake and Romy Reiner said on Wednesday they are enduring «unimaginable pain» after the «horrific and devastating loss» of their parents. They did not comment on the allegations against Nick Reiner.

Nick Reiner, 32, appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday and waived his right to enter a plea to two counts of first-degree murder. Their parents were found dead on Sunday at their Los Angeles home. The county medical examiner confirmed they died from multiple sharp force injuries. Nick Reiner was arrested Sunday night and formally charged on Tuesday.

«The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,» the siblings said in a statement shared with CBS News. «They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends. We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support from people everywhere.» They asked for privacy and for their parents to be remembered for their lives and love.

Speedy trial

At Wednesday’s hearing in downtown Los Angeles, prosecutors and the defence agreed to delay Nick Reiner’s arraignment until January 7, when he will have another opportunity to enter a plea. During the brief court session, he responded only «yes, your honour» when asked if he understood his right to a speedy trial.

The judge prohibited media from filming Nick Reiner, who wore a jail suicide-prevention smock. Observers noted his face appeared blank and his arms were shackled. His lawyer, Alan Jackson, said the case involves «complex and serious issues» and asked the public to allow the legal process to proceed with restraint and dignity.

Criminal defence experts noted the delay could allow time for a psychiatric evaluation to determine if Nick Reiner is fit to stand trial. He will remain in custody at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility until the next hearing. If found guilty, he could face life without parole or the death penalty, with prosecutors yet to decide whether to seek the latter.

Rob Reiner directed iconic films including This is Spinal Tap, Misery, and A Few Good Men. Michele Reiner was an actress, photographer and producer, and founder of Reiner Light, a photography and production company.

«This case is heartbreaking and deeply personal, not only for the Reiner family and their loved ones, but for the entire city,» said Los Angeles Police Department chief Jim McDonnell.
