Team USA’s figure skaters delivered a mixed but encouraging display in the team event at the 2026 Winter Olympics, with veteran ice dancers providing stability as a rising star navigated the pressure of his Olympic debut.

Three-time world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates produced a composed and authoritative routine in ice dance, underscoring their experience on the Olympic stage. The married duo said they entered the event focused and prepared, emphasising their goal of making a meaningful contribution to the team.

In contrast, 21-year-old men’s singles skater Ilia Malinin described his opening Olympic performance as a step rather than a peak. Nicknamed the «Quad God,» Malinin finished second in the short program behind Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama after opting for a more conservative layout than usual.

Despite falling short of his own expectations, Malinin struck an upbeat tone afterward, saying he was proud of his effort and viewed the skate as only a portion of his full potential. He acknowledged feeling the pressure of competing on Olympic ice, calling it a natural part of the experience.

With seasoned leaders anchoring the team and younger talent gaining confidence, Team USA remains firmly in contention as the figure skating team event continues.
