The music industry’s wait for Drake’s next major project has been quite literally a glacial ordeal. However, the suspense finally melted away on Tuesday when the Canadian superstar confirmed that his ninth studio album, Iceman, will officially drop on May 15.
The announcement followed a highly orchestrated and thoroughly absurd guerrilla marketing stunt in his hometown of Toronto. On Monday, Drake revealed he had frozen the album’s release date deep inside massive blocks of ice stationed across the city.
The mystery was eventually cracked by a prominent streamer known as Kishka, who retrieved a sealed bag from the thawing installation. In a move perfectly tailored for the digital age, the streamer travelled directly to Drake’s residence to unbox the contents live, revealing the mid May launch date before the rapper verified the news across his own social channels.
For eagle-eyed fans, the breadcrumbs for Iceman have been scattered for years. The title itself appears to be a direct nod to Val Kilmer’s famously cool and calculating rival character in the cinematic classic Top Gun. Drake first leaned into the moniker in 2024, teasing followers with a screenshot of a digital folder labelled «2.0 – Iceman».
The promo strategy
The promotional strategy shifted from cryptic posts to concrete releases in July 2025. Bypassing traditional label roll-outs, Drake launched a YouTube broadcast dubbed «Iceman Episode 1». The livestream served as a global listening party, previewing tracks like «What Did I Miss?» which hit streaming platforms the very next day. Subsequent digital broadcasts kept the momentum going, debuting «Which One» featuring British rap heavyweight Central Cee and «Dog House» alongside Julia Wolf and Yeat.
Iceman marks Drake’s first full-length solo venture since 2023’s For All the Dogs and arrives in the aftermath of his seismic, highly publicised clash with Kendrick Lamar. Rather than retreating after the feud, Drake spent late 2024 flooding the internet with content. In August, he bypassed the press entirely by dropping a colossal digital folder packed with studio footage, unreleased audio and behind-the-scenes clips.
This data dump included heavy-hitting tracks like «It’s Up» featuring Young Thug and 21 Savage, «Housekeeping Knows» with Latto and «Blue Green Red». Weeks later, he utilised his infamous burner Instagram account, @plottttwistttttt, to quietly release «Circadian Rhythm», «SOD» and the Playboi Carti-assisted «No Face».
While Iceman will be his solo return, Drake has hardly been absent from the charts. In February 2025, he joined forces with longtime OVO affiliate PartyNextDoor for the joint album Some Sexy Songs 4 U.
The project not only spawned the massive hit «Nokia» but also produced «Somebody Loves Me», which successfully secured a melodic rap performance nomination at the 2026 Grammy Awards. Now, as the ice finally breaks on his next era, the industry is watching to see exactly what the Iceman has in store.
